Higher Education in North Texas: A Booming Sector with Bright Prospects
Leaders in the education industry are constantly innovating to ensure higher education remains accessible and affordable for students. We had the opportunity to sit down with R. Gerald Turner, President of Southern Methodist University, and Jennifer Cowley, President of The University of Texas at Arlington, to gain insight into the state of higher education, funding, in-demand skills, and meeting the needs of both students and local businesses.
Gerald Turner on the Prosperity of Higher Education in North Texas
According to R. Gerald Turner, North Texas is experiencing a boom in the education sector, partly driven by companies relocating from various parts of the country. The region’s prosperity is strongly tied to its universities, with approximately 60% of the student population coming from out of state. Notably, two-thirds to three-quarters of these out-of-state students choose to remain in Dallas after graduation. Consequently, having reputable universities in North Texas is of utmost importance. Key players in this region include the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) and Southern Methodist University (SMU), both serving vital roles, alongside the University of North Texas (UNT) and UT Arlington.
Turner also revealed that there is a substantial demand for higher education, evidenced by the approximately 16,000 undergraduate applications received for just 1,600 positions. Despite the significant interest, he believes there are even more opportunities available than they currently exploit, emphasizing the strong desire to engage with higher-education institutions at present.
Jennifer Cowley on UTA’s Strategic Approach
Jennifer Cowley shed light on The University of Texas at Arlington‘s (UTA) strategic planning efforts, involving thousands of community members. They are determined to create a positive impact by focusing on their students, helping them thrive and succeed. Additionally, UTA aims to build strong partnerships within the community, serving the people of North Texas and beyond. Adding Value to Continuing Education at SMU
With many students pondering whether continuing education is worth their time and money, Southern Methodist University (SMU) strives to provide added value. Scholarships play a vital role in supporting students, particularly those qualifying for need-based Pell Grants. SMU actively promotes funding support for these scholarships. Remarkably, the average debt of undergraduate students is less than $20,000, affecting only 28% of graduating seniors. Consequently, the majority of students graduate without debt, providing them with a significant advantage as they embark on their careers. Although debt-free education cannot be guaranteed for everyone, SMU is dedicated to making it a reality for as many students as possible.
UTA’s Research Contributions: Cementing Leadership in the Region
The University of Texas at Arlington takes pride in being a top research university. Through diverse partnerships, UTA conducts research for various organizations, including projects focused on building autonomous blimps and developing control systems for these vehicles. They also received a substantial $10 million grant from the US Department of Transportation to advance research on more sustainable concrete materials, mitigating greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles. UTA’s innovative research initiatives cement their position as leaders in the region.
Meeting Industry Demands at SMU
To address the current demand for professional skills, SMU is launching an exciting initiative – the Data Analytics Institute. This institute will offer three degrees across different colleges: business, engineering, and math, emphasizing the applied use of math in the field of data analytics. By reflecting feedback from businesses, SMU ensures its programming stays aligned with industry needs, providing relevant education and training. Beyond data analytics, SMU is also making rapid strides in artificial intelligence (AI), with a dedicated NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD in their university data center supporting AI research and comprehensive education in this field.
UTA: Bridging the Gap Between Students and Local Employers
The University of Texas at Arlington boasts a large division dedicated to supporting micro-credentials, catering to employers throughout the region. These micro-credentials cover various areas, including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and environmental health and safety. Additionally, UTA offers students opportunities to gain additional skills and micro-credentials, enhancing the value of their degrees. By staying in tune with regional employers’ needs and developing new degree programs, UTA ensures its graduates are readily employed. One such forthcoming program is the bachelor’s degree in resource and energy engineering, the first of its kind in the U.S., preparing students for designing, developing, and evaluating energy generation, storage, conversion, and distribution systems.
Conclusion
In conclusion, North Texas is witnessing remarkable growth in the higher education sector, offering immense opportunities for universities like SMU and UTA to thrive. Both institutions are dedicated to providing exceptional education, conducting groundbreaking research, and equipping students with the skills demanded by the region’s employers. As they continue to adapt and innovate, these universities remain at the forefront of shaping the future of higher education in North Texas and beyond.
