In April of 2015, the Food and Drug Administration approved a new injectable treatment called Kybella®. Made by Allergan, the same company that provides Botox®, the first procedures using Kybella began in June of 2015. Kybella® is a manufactured product (deoxycholic acid) that’s identical to something produced naturally in the body that absorbs fat cells. Like Botox®, Kybella® is an injection procedure designed specifically for treating double chins. Each patient responds differently, but in general, between four and six visits can be required, with 15-25 injections needed per treatment. Kybella® is considered an effective alternative to Liposuction. Its primary advantage is that it’s a non-invasive procedure that only takes about fifteen minutes per treatment. It is not promoted as being more cost-effective than Liposuction because you cannot determine in advance how many treatments will be necessary to achieve the desired results. More than 80% of people with double chins indicate they would be interested in a treatment that could help them look better. If you are considering a procedure to lessen the noticeability of fat deposits under the chin and are concerned about options that are more invasive or that require more recovery time, Kybella® may be an approach to consider.
