Now is the perfect time of year for outdoor entertaining. The weather is beautiful, and the mosquitoes have yielded their dominance over us. As family and friends arrive for Spring Breaks and holidays, it’s time to take a fresh look outdoors and create additional entertaining space in your own backyard — or, if you live in a condo, at a cabana.

Whether you have a cabana, a loggia or a seating area near a pool or under a tree, make it a welcome and beautiful respite for family and friends. When you’re planning, it makes good design sense that this outdoor living space becomes an extension of the personality of the rest of the home.

Unfortunately, this is usually the most neglected design area of the home or the most overdone. It’s either filled, with no plan or thought, from local discount stores — or it looks like Margaritaville on steroids. Let’s say this: If you can call it the “Banana Cabana,” you have gone too far.

This is not to say that you can’t have fun with an outdoor living space. This is definitely the place to design with more fun and whimsy. However, it should be thought of as an extension of the interior of the home, but with more pizzazz. Generally, this can be achieved with a splash of color in accessories or by choosing tropical colors for the walls — if it’s a cabana or a loggia — and using another element to connect to the interior space, such as furniture style, color or texture.

Function should not be overlooked. In all cases, you’re decorating a seating area out of the sun. There should be seating for at least two to four people — more if space allows — with space also dictating the use of recliners or upright chairs. Myriad outdoor fabrics are now available in colors and patterns that were once offered only for the interior. Furniture has also been transformed to accommodate harsh sun and extreme weather, both hot and cold. Synthetic wicker is popular now, and teak never goes out of style.

If possible, add creature comforts. Electric power to the area will allow for a small refrigerator or ice machine. A ceiling fan is a must and is a wonderful decorative addition. Having the ability to light the area creates a perfect location for cocktails in the evening.

All areas, especially those not clearly defined — e.g., poolside — should be defined by outdoor area rugs. Outdoor rugs are available in many patterns and colors and can often be hosed clean, when necessary. Actually, today, almost any interior-design item has a version available for outdoor use — right down to fabrics and trims, such as bouillon fringe and tassels.

By taking the time to create an outdoor living space that is comfortable and beautiful, you will enhance your enjoyment outside and offer an additional dimension to your home entertainment. What are you waiting for? Grab a cocktail, and enjoy!
